Someone asked if we will open in Amsterdam. I said, perhaps a tad too smartly, ‘No. I only ever go where the vine is indigenous.’

® Rollo Pinkie: This was a bald lie. For years, Eustace carried on an affair with a young designer in Dublin and travelled there frequently. Late at night, he would often make mawkishly sentimental claims to Irish ancestry, even though there are no vineyards in Eire.

We were asked to gather for a group photograph. I made sure to stand on the right, because when a group photograph is published, the person standing on the right will appear on the left, hence his name will be first in the caption. I do think attention to detail is important.

As the group dissolved, Quentin said to me, ‘That went well,’ as we ambled to my office for my whisky and his martini.

‘It did, didn’t it?’ I said absent-mindedly. My attention was now taken by a piece of paper on my desk, next to the inspirational Welsh slate.

I read, smiled and passed it to Quentin. It was a telex from Charles Eames:

‘Come to New York soonest. New Museum of Modern Art exhibition of my work and I want you to meet curator Philip Johnson. Ever. Charles.’
